Warning Consumers To Do Their Homework When Choosing A Plastic Surgeon

Salt Lake City, UT. – The Utah State Plastic Surgery Society, which is a regional society of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and a component society of the Utah Medical Association has formed an educational campaign to warn the public that just because a doctor says he can do plastic surgery does not mean that he or she is qualified to do so.

Utah has a soaring number of physicians that are not board certified plastic surgeons that are marketing themselves as “cosmetic surgeons”. Often they advertise themselves as “board certified”, yet consumers aren’t aware of the distinct difference between a board certified plastic surgeon and a board certified cosmetic surgeon, or other board certification. Physicians are marketing themselves this way because of the lucrative, cash up front industry that cosmetic medicine can attract. Many of the patients going to these physicians are getting botched surgeries that can be painful, disfiguring and costly. Several articles have recently created a lot of buzz in the media that talks about this:

• USA Today – Lack of training can be deadly in Cosmetic Surgery
• Cosmetic Surgery gets cheaper, faster, scarier
American Society of Plastic Surgeons Urges Patients To Check Up on Their Surgeons for Their Safety

By law, any doctor with a medical license may legally practice in all fields and perform any procedure on a patient. Some doctors take advantage of this privilege and are performing cosmetic and reconstructive procedures after a weekend course. Board Certified Plastic Surgeons have at least six years of surgical training, have passed rigorous testing and operate in accredited medical facilities.

The Utah State Plastic Surgery Society urges the public to do their homework before undergoing cosmetic and reconstructive procedures. This patient safety campaign focuses on teaching the public how to find a properly trained plastic surgeon, certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, the only plastic surgery board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties.

Summertime is NO time for fat

Thursday, July 28th, 2011

Although advertisements for fat grafting the breast as an alternative to traditional methods of breast augmentation such as implants have become commonplace, it is still not yet a widely accepted method.

Very few plastic surgeons consider enlarging the breast using fat to be a suitable replacement for implants which have a long, safe track record. Because plastic surgeons are the authorities on breast augmentation, it is very educational to see that very few will pick fat over implants.

Several reasons exist for the feeling of plastic surgeons that patients do better and are safer to enlarge their breasts using implants.

As of today, no plastic surgeon in the State of Utah or city of Salt Lake or Ogden augments the breast using fat. That should be a strong signal to the patient as to the wisdom of this technique.

If you would like more information on Fat Grafts or Breast Implants please feel free to contact my office!

Laser is the Loser!

Wednesday, March 9th, 2011

In a recent survey conducted by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, only 3.9 percent of Plastic Surgeons use Laser Assisted Liposuction (the technology behind SmartLipo(tm). The reasoning for such a low rate of usage was that the respondents felt that Laser Assisted Liposuction was associated with a higher rate of complications when compared with more traditional methods of liposuction.

It is a very sobering reminder for patients that the most important decision that they make is their choice of surgeon. To expect or recommend patients first decide which method of liposuction they desire is to ignore the reality that the decision is best left to the surgeon who has the experience, research data, and training to evaluate each technology based on efficacy and safety.

Patients can rest assured that Plastic Surgeons are relatively insensitive to marketing hype and pressures from manufacturers (and even patients themselves) when it comes to embracing unproven technologies. Board Certified Plastic Surgeons are uniquely qualified to answer your cosmetic surgical questions. Feel Free to Contact Dr. Brzowski with any questions or concerns.

Till next time….
