Rhinoplasty in Salt Lake City, Utah
Rhinoplasty Background
A rhinoplasty is surgery to revise, enhance or correct the nose, a fundamental part of the face. The surgery is usually performed to reshape the nose to better match the rest of the face. For example, a rhinoplasty can revise:
- a nose with a less-than-straight silhouette
- a nose that is too large for the face
- a bulbous or drooping tip
- a hooked nose
- too-large nostrils, or asymmetrical nostrils
- a too-wide bridge or overall shape
- a nose that deviates from the aesthetic ideal
A rhinoplasty can also be performed in conjunction with another procedure (such as a facelift or blepharoplasty).
If you are having a breathing problem, Dr. Brzowski will refer you to one of his colleagues for internal nasal work that may require adjusting the position of the septum.
Rhinoplasty Recovery Period
Although you can be "up and around" in almost immediately after your rhinoplasty, it's best to avoid vigorous activity for the first 72 hours. You will need help overnight and should plan to take your narcotic pain medication as needed for the first few days. It is also helpful to keep your head elevated during that time and avoid maneuvers that force blood to rush to your face. Ice packs will also reduce the bruising and swelling which usually last for a couple of weeks - some patients even develop "black eyes." Some swelling is possible for up to a year afterward. Any dressings for your new nose will be removed in the office at a pre-arranged date.
Rhinoplasty Risks
As with any operation, there are risks of bleeding, poor healing, infection, dissatisfaction with the results, and complications from the anesthetic such as blood clots and etc. Certain behaviors around the time of your surgery can influence your risks of problems such as smoking and failing to follow instructions regarding wound care and activities. Specifically, smokers are required to discontinue smoking a minimum of 3 weeks prior to surgery and not resume smoking until proper healing as been verified.
