Background

When one or more pregnancies have left indelible changes to a woman’s body that cannot be eliminated with exercise and proper diet, a “mommy makeover” may be an appropriate and very gratifying step to take. Mommy makeovers are combinations of cosmetic surgery procedures, such breast augmentation and tummy tuck or perhaps three of the following procedures, depending on the unique characteristics of each patient:

  • a breast lift (mastopexy) with or without breast implants, to counteract the effects of pregnancy, breastfeeding and/or aging, or
  • breast reduction, or
  • breast augmentation
  • a “tummy tuck” (i.e., abdominoplasty, full or mini) to return the waistline and abdomen to their best contour
  • thigh lift
  • buttocks lift
  • body lift – combines the results of a tummy tuck, outer thigh lift, and buttock lift
  • arm lift (brachioplasty) to correct loose, hanging skin of the upper arms
  • liposuction to remove stubborn fat deposits and return a toned, firm appearance to the thighs, buttocks, arms

Consultation

An extensive pre-makeover consultation phase with Dr. Brzowski is imperative. He will explore your desires, needs and expectations, in addition to:

  • your current health and lifestyle
  • your medical history
  • how your makeover will affect your family life
  • the details of the surgery, and the risks

It’s important that you know what a mommy makeover involves, and that you know about the significant changes and recovery time that you will experience with this cosmetic surgery.

The Pre-operative Period

Approximately two weeks before your surgery, you’ll need to visit our offices for another check-up and for pre-surgery instructions. Medications that can safely be discontinued should stop at this time. Smokers will need to quit smoking at least three weeks before surgery. You’ll receive prescriptions for pain medication and another for an antibiotic. Consent forms for the surgery and anesthesia will be explained and will need your signature.

“Before” photographs will be taken for your record. Any further questions that you have about your makeover can also be answered at this pre-surgery visit. You will also need to arrange to have an adult drive you home after your post-surgery recovery and to stay with you overnight.

The Day of Surgery

Your surgery will be conducted under general anesthesia. The necessary incisions will be marked before anesthesia, and the length of your surgery will depend on the particular combination of procedures that will be performed. It is possible that drains will be inserted temporarily to help your body release extra fluid after the surgery. Your complete recovery from the anesthesia is necessary before you leave the facility; this may require an overnight stay at an outside care facility.

The Post-operative Period

A mommy makeover is followed by a significant recovery period. You should plan to forego many physical activities for a week and more, depending on the particular circumstances of your makeover and your physical condition.

Pain medication and the post-operative antibiotic will aid your recovery. You may experience bruising, swelling and/or tenderness at the sites of surgery; these are temporary.

A post-surgery visit to Dr. Brzowski will be used to monitor your progress and to ensure that your recovery goes as well as possible – both physically and emotionally.

Risks

As with any surgery, a mommy makeover has risks such as infection, blood clot, hematoma, and complications. Dr. Brzowski will discuss the benefits and risks of a mommy makeover – particularly the specific surgeries you are considering – in depth before any surgery is planned.
