Salt Lake City Eyelid Surgery – What to Expect

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

As we age, our skin starts to lose elasticity and suppleness. This results in sagging and wrinkles. Often this is most noticeable around the eyes. People with flabby skin around the eyes often look tired or distracted even when they are perfectly rested and attentive. Although many times diet, exercise and lifestyle changes can improve a person’s appearance at any age, sometimes there are just stubborn little marks of maturity that persist. People who would like to tighten up the skin around their eyes and eyelids might want to consider eyelid surgery as a realistic option for improving their overall appearance.

Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty gives the patient a rejuvenated appearance. This procedure will help to reduce puffiness and will remove excess fat around the eyes. It will probably not help with dark circles under the eyes or will deminish crow’s feet. However, in some cases the procedure can help with drooping eyelids, bags under the eyes, or excess skin around the eyes. If you are a healthy adult with no pre-existing conditions who doesn’t smoke, you may be a good candidate for eyelid surgery or another type of procedure to help rejuvenate the skin around the eyes like a brow lift.

The incisions made during eyelid surgery are carefully applied in areas that will be hidden between the lid and the eyelash. The natural structure of the eye allows this to be possible. Then the doctor will be able to tighten muscles and remove excess fat and skin. Under the eye, an incision can be made just under the lash. This way if there is any scarring, the marks will not be noticeable. Sometimes, laser chemical peels are used to remove excess troublesome skin underneath the eyelid. Permanent visible scarring is unusual. It is much more common that you will be very pleased with the results of your eyelid surgery.

The recovery time for eyelid surgery is usually fairly quick. You are recommended not to engage in stressful, vigorous, or even routine activities for about 72 hours after your surgery. After that, you will want to keep icing your eyes to keep swelling down. Long term side effects are not very likely, but you should see a doctor immediately if you suffer from any long-term blurring or eye pain. Sometimes, eyelid surgery patients decide to undergo other facelift options during their eyelid surgery. This is an ideal time so that you can save yourself the unpleasant side effects of multiple surgeries.

Tummy Tuck – Abdominoplasty for Women after Pregnancy

Friday, August 27th, 2010

Tummy tuck often help women achieve the body they want after pregnancy and childbirth take their toll on a woman’s body, and after the baby, women often find that the skin on their stomachs won’t respond or return to normal even after the loss of so-called baby weight. Sometimes, when a woman has lost a lot of weight very quickly, the skin and abdominal muscles have stretched out and they don’t retract back to their original elasticity. This results in flabby, loose skin at the base of the belly. Many women find this extra skin very difficult to live with, and they decide to investigate the procedure of a tummy tuck, which is also known by the name abdominoplasty.

Sometimes, women may want to consider getting liposuction during the tummy tuck. This would be because the incision will already have been made and the results of the surgery will often be much better if all of the stubborn fat deposits have been removed from the body prior to the tuck. Liposuction can help achieve maximum results. The degree of the stretching in the skin and the abdominal wall of the patient will determine the degree of the incision and the removal. Sometimes women can just have a small procedure executed on their lower belly only. This kind of miniature tummy tuck is a little gentler on the body because the incision is smaller.

While a tummy tuck should not serve as a replacement for a healthy weight loss and diet program, sometimes this procedure can help to fill in where weight loss and exercise have proved in effective. Also, if you are prone to gaining and losing a lot of weight at different times in your life, you may not be a good candidate for a tummy tuck. You want to make sure you are at a stable weight that you intend to maintain before the procedure because the gains made through the procedure can easily be reduced or even eliminated if you immediately gain weight again after your tummy tuck. For this reason, women who plan to have more children and go through more pregnancies should wait until after they are finished bearing children to have their tummy tuck in Salt Lake City.

You should also not expect that your tummy tuck will permanently erase stretch marks, but sometimes these marks can be improved if they happen to be on areas of the body that will be removed or altered during the tummy tuck. While any surgery carries risks, many women have had successful tummy tuck procedures with positive results. Their stories are an inspiration to women who would like to achieve the best body they can regardless of their current circumstances. The best body results at times include other procedures like breast lift.

Overseas Plastic Surgery

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

Today’s blog is regarding travel overseas for cosmetic surgery. We are seeing a rise in patients who travel overseas for these types of procedures. Unfortunately, the motivation for this decision is usually entirely cost-based – surgery in third world and less developed countries is usually significantly cheaper. Equally alarming in its frequency are the number of complications from plastic surgery procedures. Breast augmentation, liposuction, and facelift, are among the few procedures that are being reported here in the US by plastic surgeons.

An article recently published by the Associated Press describes a surgeon in Australia who was just charged with manslaughter as a result of his treatment of patients. This physician is originally from the US, but his medical privileges were revoked, prompting his relocation to Australia. There, he became head of his surgery department despite having lost his license to practice medicine in the US. The fact that the US has the most stringent requirements for training, certification, and maintenance of competency should be remembered by anyone seeking care outside of the US. Even in a more “Western” country like Australia, you are not guaranteed the same level of precautions against incompetent providers.

With purely elective procedures such as cosmetic surgical procedures, one should be even more demanding that the plastic surgeon meet these tougher US qualifications before seeking treatment. Also be aware, that in many instances, upon their return home to the US, it has been difficult and even impossible for patients to find physicians willing to assume their care for complications that arose from procedures performed outside the US.

Til next time….

The Naked Truth – Got Real Plastic Surgery?

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

One question I have to ask patients who are seeking cosmetic surgery is, “Got Real Plastic Surgery?”  This phrase was coined by a colleague of mine to stimulate the thoughts of patients who are seeking elective cosmetic surgical procedures such as liposuction.  Whereas we now see lots of physicians and non-physicians promoting themselves as qualified practitioners of cosmetic surgical procedures, much fewer of them are “Real Plastic Surgeons.”

The safest way to ensure that you are getting “Real Plastic Surgery” is to only consider surgery by a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgery.  Member Surgeons, like myself,  have at least 6 years of training and experience in surgery.  No one is more qualified than Member Surgeons from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.  You may research your surgeon and geographical area on our website at:  http://www1.plasticsurgery.org/ebusiness4/PatientConsumers/find_a_surgeon/.

If you are interested in a cosmetic surgery procedures such as breast augmentation, liposuction, or eyelid surgery please feel free to contact my office to schedule a consultation to meet with me.
